A few years ago, I decided to get my kids a pet, so I checked out the local shelter. On May 11, 2011, I drove there to see what animals were available. I had absolutely no intention of getting a pet that day. I just wanted to explore my options.

I walked in and asked to see the adoptable pets, and a shelter worker happily showed me around. When I stepped into the back where the animals were kept, I felt overwhelmed and heartbroken seeing so many in need. There were so many different types and breeds that I decided I would go home and research to find the best fit.

But on my way out, I heard a soft, sad sound coming from a small cage.

Small brown and white dog wearing a red collar sitting on green grass in a sunny park, tongue out and smiling.

When I walked closer, I saw a medium-sized Jack Russell mix pressed tightly against the front of his cage. He stared at me with the saddest eyes and whined softly. It broke my heart. I asked the worker about him, and she told me his time was up and he needed to be adopted as soon as possible.

Knowing he had no time left crushed me.

I decided to take him home.

I adopted him on the spot. After finishing the paperwork, I took him straight to PetSmart and bought everything he needed. He was so happy to be out of the shelter and was incredibly affectionate from the start.

I named him Lucky, and he truly lives up to his name. He sleeps beside me every night and follows me everywhere during the day. That trip to the shelter changed both of our lives.

He has his fur-ever home.

James and his blind brother, William, were found abandoned on the street when they were just four weeks old. James was born with one blind eye that started to cause him discomfort. Over time, that eye became increasingly painful and irritated. James is the seeing-eye cat for his brother, making his condition even more urgent to treat.
