A little over 12 years ago, my husband at the time decided it was time to add another dog to our family. We already had one dog and one cat, so we went to our local humane society and came across the most beautiful Shepherd-Heeler mix. She was about nine months old at the time.

For some reason, the name she came with was “Bountiful.” We immediately changed it to Maggie. She was our Maggie Mae.

Maggie loved everyone—kids, adults, other animals, anything that would pay attention to her.

I think the best time in her life, and mine, was when my husband was working up in Idaho. We stayed on a 5,000-acre farm where Maggie was allowed to run around and check everything out, including the cows. She loved it there.

Unfortunately, yesterday, after a few rough days of Maggie not eating and not feeling well, I decided to take her to the vet. He confirmed that she was in pain, and I made the heartbreaking decision to let her go back to that farm and wait for me to join her.

I will always love that sidekick of mine. She was always there for me through both the good times and the bad. There will never be another dog like her.

I truly believe animals from humane societies are the best.
