My last four Dobermans have been rescues. I heard of an elderly blue Dobergal at our local animal control who was heart worm positive but, because of her personality, hadn't been put down.

She was a stray with a poor coat, very worn down teeth, and almost no muscles in her hind legs. It looked like she had either been in a small pen or on a chain and received no exercise. She also had numerous growths and tumors, but in spite of all that, she was the happiest of dogs. Her front feet just danced.

Miss Brie (at her age, she deserved the respect of 'Miss') came through the heart worm treatment and removal of tumors with flying colors.

Our house is a split-level with a dog door down a long set of stairs. We didn't think Miss Brie would ever be able to manage those steps since she was so weak in the rear. My husband tacked non-skid strips on the deck steps and we let her in and out upstairs. She loved to run in the half-acre backyard with our other three dogs. Over the weeks, her muscles became stronger until she was running up and down the main stairs and flying through the dog door. Her favorite activity was hunting chipmunks with our male Whippet. She even caught a few!

It soon became apparent why she was picked up as a stray. On several occasions, she was able to run through the dog gate as I was moving the lawn mower in or out. She would then take off, running through the neighborhood playing 'catch me, if you can'. Even in the pouring rain.

We had Miss Brie for 18 months before she developed serious pancreatitis. She didn't respond to treatment and also went blind, perhaps from a blood clot. To end her suffering, we decided to let her go. While she was with us, she exuded happiness, danced, played with the other dogs, adopted 'her' cat, and lounged on the furniture. Please don't discount older dogs, and please don't shop, adopt.
