Pebbles was found as a baby kitten in a ditch after being hit by a car. My cousin-in-law, Melissa, found her and nursed her back to health. Pebbles lived very happily with Melissa and her family for many years.

When my cousin Chris and Melissa had their first son, they decided not to have animals in the house in case their son was allergic. So, in 2000, I adopted Pebbles, and I loved her very much.

She always had to be touching me. When I was sad, she would come over and snuggle her face into mine. Sometimes she would even lick away my tears. She was the light of my life for many years.

In 2007, Pebs was diagnosed with terminal liver disease. From that moment on, I made a promise to Pebbles that I would not let her suffer.

In November 2008, after all treatments were exhausted, Pebbles started to get very sick. She had stopped eating and drinking, and I had to give her Maxeran injections four times a day just so she could keep the tiniest amount of food down. She would hide because she felt so poorly. She had lost a tremendous amount of weight, and her skin and eyes were yellow from the jaundice.

I knew it was time.

My heart was shattered knowing I was going to lose her, but I had promised her I would not let her be in pain, even though I did not want to let her go.

She went to sleep peacefully in my arms, with my mom by my side and the very compassionate doctors at Basinview Animal Hospital in Bedford, Nova Scotia, helping us through the process. They were amazing during that very difficult time.

There has been an empty space in my heart ever since. But Pebbles lived a wonderful life. She was 15, and she had two families who loved her very much.

I know Pebs is in heaven now, pain-free, comfortable, and happy.

So Pebs, if you see this and have somehow learned to read, please know that I love you and miss you very much.

James and his blind brother, William, were found abandoned on the street when they were just four weeks old. James was born with one blind eye that started to cause him discomfort. Over time, that eye became increasingly painful and irritated. James is the seeing-eye cat for his brother, making his condition even more urgent to treat.
