Late on the evening of July 13, after leaving the veterinary clinic, I noticed a cat lying helpless beside the road.
She had been struck by a car and was in terrible condition. She was bleeding, her jaw was broken, and the impact had left her blind.

The person who hit her never stopped. She was left alone and suffering on the side of the road. People walked past as though she were invisible, as though her life did not matter.
Although she was badly injured, she was terrified and tried to run away. After a long and careful effort, I managed to catch her.

As I tried to rescue her, a passerby warned me, “Be careful. What you’re doing is dangerous. She could scratch you.”
But all I could see was a frightened animal in desperate pain. Leaving her there was simply not an option.

I rushed her to the veterinary clinic, where she is now receiving treatment. I named her Nejia, which means “saved” in my Tunisian language, because I hope that heartbreaking night will become the beginning of a new life for her.
The veterinarians believe Nejia will need to remain hospitalized for about a month. Her recovery will be long, and her veterinary expenses are already significant.

Nejia’s rescue came during an incredibly difficult period. I currently care for more than 70 rescued cats and dogs in Tunisia.
In recent weeks, I rescued a puppy during an extreme heat wave and fought to save four cats who had been poisoned. Thankfully, all four survived. However, every rescue brings new veterinary expenses while the animals’ needs continue to grow.
Despite the financial hardship and constant challenges, I cannot walk away when an animal is suffering. Every life matters.
Nejia deserves the chance to heal, feel safe, and experience kindness instead of pain.
Thank you for taking the time to read Nejia’s story and for caring about forgotten animals like her. Your compassion gives hope to those who have no one else to turn to.
