One June, I had just moved into my first apartment and begun my work as a veterinary assistant in Latham, New York. I have been in the animal field my entire life, from kindergarten through college, but my dreams of being a veterinarian just didn't work out. However, I still was able to work in my chosen field.

One day at work, Animal Control brought in two three-day-old kittens. We were told the mother was hit by a car on a busy road and they had found these two in the bushes. They had horrible upper respiratory infections and still needed to be bottle fed. No one wanted to take on the task, so I volunteered.
The male kitten passed away after two days, and the little calico female stubbornly clung to life. Every hour or two, I was up and feeding her, cleaning her. Morgana, my well established black cat, didn't take kindly to the wobbly little kitten bouncing around our apartment but gradually grew to tolerate her. Sort of.

As the calico, who I had dubbed Nym, grew to six weeks of age, my manager at work asked if I was ready to put her up for adoption. I asked for another day or two to spend with her and then I'd bring her into work to set her up in an activity cage.
That night, I was laying in bed and reading a book. Next thing I know, the six week old kitten had crawled out of her pen up onto the bedspread, then bounced her little fluffy self up the bed to curl up between the crook of my neck and shoulder.

Nym's purr was very loud for her little body and, as she promptly curled up right next to my ear, she began purring her loudest and most happiest of purrs. That sealed the deal. The next morning when I arrived at the veterinary hospital, I filled out the adoption application and placed it on my manager's desk.
Four years later, Nym still curls up next to me every night.
