I had just walked my cocker spaniel, Max, after getting home from job hunting. All I wanted to do was change clothes and veg out in front of the TV. Max had another idea. He wanted to go back outside, so back out we went.

He immediately started pulling me, something he never did, toward a neighbor's truck. Once he reached it, he surprised me by crawling underneath. Before I could bend down to see what in the world he was doing, he crawled back to me, and following behind him was a very tiny, very vocal, gray and white kitten.
I immediately scooped the baby up and brought her inside.
Using the last of the money I had, I took her to the vet. She was only four weeks old, covered in fleas, and filled with worms. She had ringworm on one ear, and she had suffered trauma to her tiny head. I named her Pinky because she was so small.
Max loved her and cuddled with her. I had an earnest talk with my older cat, and although she was not affectionate toward Pinky, she accepted her addition to the household.
I found out that a neighbor had thrown her outside because she had scratched his niece.
That was seven years ago. Pinky got a bit bigger. She now weighs five pounds. She is blind in one eye and suffers occasional seizures. The vet says this is due to her head trauma.
Since day one, she has awakened me with a pat on my arm or my face. Then we go to her bowl so I can pour her some kibble, even though there is always some already there.
Oh, and the day Max found her was my birthday.
