She came to me, and from then on, “Precious” was her name. She was a shy cat who didn’t seem to enjoy too much attention from the rest of the family, but for some reason, she loved me the most.

We lived on a farm, and she loved spending her days outdoors. Whenever I walked down the field to feed the chickens, she followed me. Sometimes she would climb into the loft of the garage and walk out onto the roof just to get my attention. She would pretend to be scared so I would climb up and “rescue” her.

Every night she came inside and waited for me on my bed.

When it was time for me to move out, I wanted to take her with me, even though my parents thought it was a bad idea because of her age. I took her anyway, knowing it would be too hard to live without her. She must have felt the same way, because she gave up the outdoors to stay with me.

She adapted instantly to apartment life, and we jokingly called it her retirement home. My boyfriend loved her just as much as I did, and she made our new place truly feel like home. As the only cat, her personality really shined. Even at 14 years old, she seemed active and happy.

We were completely taken by surprise when we learned she had lymphoma. Just a few days later, in early November, we lost her.

Life without my Precious kitty has been so hard. But I am forever grateful that she chose me to love and spend her life with. She truly was a gift from God.

James and his blind brother, William, were found abandoned on the street when they were just four weeks old. James was born with one blind eye that started to cause him discomfort. Over time, that eye became increasingly painful and irritated. James is the seeing-eye cat for his brother, making his condition even more urgent to treat.
