I lived in a fair sized apartment with my rescue German Shepherd, Milton. I always thought about adding another cat again after losing Gizmo, but I wanted to wait until I had a house again.

One day, the county came to set up traps because we were overrun by cats that had been let out or left behind by renters. The nightly howling and fights did not help matters. The sad thing was it is a kill shelter.

I was told they caught all but one - a black one that would run like the wind when anyone tried to get near her. I started to keep an eye out for the one that couldn’t be caught. I finally spotted her, and I walked up to her.

She stayed put and even greeted me with a loud purr.

I thought at first I had the wrong cat. However, the manager confirmed it was the right cat. She was abandoned by renters and had already lived out on her own for the prior three months. It took only a few days to get her to trust me and eat inside my home.

The first trip was straight to the vet. Flea-free and with a clean bill of health, I brought her back home. She was not very happy about the dog, and he learned quickly to respect her claws.

After the first seven days in my home, both dog and cat sat next to each other begging at my kitchen for goodies, Nine days in, they were eating side by side.

Today, two years later, Raven is not happy unless she has a bed next to the dog. She is the most loving, attached cat I have ever had, and I am glad she chose this human!
