I was raised in a military family, and we never really had dogs when I was growing up due to the constant moving overseas. When I was 11, we moved to Fort Carson, Colorado, and my dad and I finally decided to nag my mom into getting us a dog. She finally agreed to go to the local animal shelter just to take a look. Mom wanted an Australian cattle dog, and dad wanted a beagle.

I almost immediately found a dog to whom my heart belonged. It was a sheepdog, "Oreo-colored" with heterochromia. I begged my mom, but the dog was surrounded by other people and I was told there was no chance we would get it.

After walking around, I found a dog cowering in the back of her cage with the widest eyes and a mutilated docked tail. They had her listed as a no-name stray beagle/Australian cattle dog mix. My family decided we should meet her. She was shaking horribly and wanted nothing to do with us. We took her home anyways.

Eight years later, Sasha lives in Germany with my grandmother since our landlord wouldn't let us keep her when we were over there, but whenever I go back to Germany, it's like I never left. She's a fierce protector, the best at cuddling, and the klutziest thing that trips over her own feet. She immediately wins everyone over when she wags her horribly docked tail. I'm so glad I kept looking past that Oreo dog.

Sasha truly is the greatest stray to find her way home into our hearts.
