Scottie came to us at the end of November 2013, a stray our friends had taken in. It was brutally cold, and he was so little. I fell in love with his face before I had even met him.

My husband and I discussed bringing him home because we already had a young cat. Our friends had him checked for a microchip or an identifying tattoo, but he had neither. We decided to take him home with us.

We met a very scared kitten who was tiny and needed some attention. After he hid under the bed, frightened of everything, we made an appointment with the vet.

He was underweight and about six months old. He also tested positive for feline leukemia virus (FeLV). After some discussion, we promised to make our home his forever home. For the time being, he would need to stay apart from Pumpkin, our other cat, while we arranged her vaccinations with the vet.

After six weeks of living in the basement with lots of love and attention, Scottie gained weight and came out of his shell. His introduction to our dog, Ebony, and Pumpkin was quick. Soon, we were all living together, and he had the entire house to roam.

Scottie was never a very active, playful kitty. Maybe he had never had the chance to be a kitten. He is my baby, and I love his cuddles and the way he follows me around the house, meowing at me the entire time.

This past week, he was sleeping more, barely eating, and had started vomiting. We made a vet appointment, and the news was not good.

The vet found two tumors, one in his abdomen and one in his chest, which we were told were related to FeLV. He also had fluid in his lungs. After talking with the vet, we learned that he had only a matter of days left.

We brought him home. We will help him cross over, but we all needed time to say goodbye.

It is far too soon. I am crying as I share this, but this is still his forever home, and he will always be with us.
