I was a little uneasy about adopting a cat after my recent adoption, Troy, passed away after only two weeks with me due to a heart attack caused by hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. I thought perhaps I wasn't meant to have animals. Troy's veterinarian, however, had other ideas.

She called a month after Troy's passing because a client of hers had dropped off a cat, indicating that she no longer wanted him. I told the veterinarian that I would stop in, but I made no promises - I was still heartbroken after Troy's passing.

When I got to her office, she introduced me to Snowball. Snowball couldn't have cared less about my presence. Even though he wasn't interested in getting to know me, I knew that I needed to take him home with me. He wasn't the kind of cat that would make potential adopters fall in love with him. He was a little neurotic, slightly anxious, somewhat aloof, and not a big fan of the kitty condo he currently called home.

When he came home, his neuroses and anxiety came with. He screamed at the top of his lungs the first time I took a shower with the bathroom door closed, and he raced around the apartment, wild-eyed, knocking things off of tables and shelves. I questioned whether I'd made the right decision in bringing him home, but it didn't matter. I adopted him and that meant he was staying.

I also still wasn't set on continuing to call him Snowball. Screwball certainly was better given his neuroses and anxiety. After he settled in, however, it became apparent that "Screwball" was also very regal. As such, "Screwball" wouldn't do. That is how Screwbence J. Screwbton, III, got his name.

"Screwbs" and I had a scare about six months later. He received some shots, had an allergic reaction, and almost died. I left him at the vet for observation, and as I drove away, I sobbed. I thought I was about to lose another cat. Thankfully, he pulled through. And his royal highness has become the most loving, quirky, entertaining, anthropomorphous cat I have ever met.
