All she wanted was to be loved.

She had lived with a family who always left her outside with their other dog. When they decided to give her away, we took her in.

It took weeks before she would let us approach without growling and shaking like a leaf. She would hide beneath the table and look at us with fear in her eyes.

The veterinarian estimated that she was about a year and a half old. She had been imported from Eastern Europe, and the journey seemed to have left her traumatized. We suspect that her previous owner may have beaten her and that she had suffered a frightening experience involving an older man. Whenever men came near her, especially my grandfathers, she would hide and grunt.

Now, after several years, she has become an incredibly loving dog. She is always ready for a walk, constantly asking to be petted, and eager to play with me. She is no longer afraid all the time, and she even accepts affection from my grandfathers.

She remains deeply attached to us and terrified of being abandoned. Sometimes, she becomes sad for no apparent reason. She may never feel completely confident, but she is doing so much better than she ever would have with her previous owners.

Most importantly, she finally has a family that cares.
