We decided my mom needed a dog to keep her company while Daddy worked. I scoured California shelter sites and found Sully. He wasn’t quite what Mom wanted. She was looking for a female, older pug weighing at least 20 pounds. Sully was a one-year-old male Pug/Min Pin mix who weighed only seven pounds. But Daddy knew he was the one.

However, we couldn’t adopt him until September, and it was only July. Thankfully, Waggin Tails Rescue held him for us. Daddy picked him up on Mom and Dad’s 50th wedding anniversary.

Sully became Daddy’s constant companion. We called him “the appendage” because Daddy took him everywhere!

Soon after, Mom became ill, and Sully helped Daddy through his pain. Then Daddy became ill. Sully stayed by his side every day and night throughout his treatment. He made Dad smile and gave him a sense of purpose and another reason to keep fighting.

We lost Daddy, and now Sully and Mom have moved to Colorado with me. Sully was Daddy’s best friend, and now he’s ours.

He makes us smile every day with his crazy antics, chasing rabbits, squirrels, and deer. He thinks he’s mighty and mean, but he’s really just a sweet, lovable goon.

He has helped carry us through heartbreak while reminding us every day why Daddy chose him. He has even turned my husband into mush, despite my husband being adamant that there would be no more dogs. Sully has converted him into a complete dog pushover, and now they spend all day together.

As a funny coincidence, Mom’s sister adopted a dog at the same time we adopted Sully, even though they lived many states away in Missouri while we were in California. Her dog’s name is Sully, too!

Neither of us knew the other was adopting until we called to share the news. The fact that they were both named Sully somehow makes it feel like they were both meant to be.
