It was June 2010, and I had lost my beloved cat of 16 years just one week earlier. Losing Tiger was incredibly difficult because she had been with me for more than half my life. However, I knew my other cat, Bowie, needed a companion during the day so he would not be lonely. He is a sensitive cat who needs someone nearby.

I began searching rescues and shelters sooner than I probably would have preferred. Still, none of the cats I met truly clicked with me as “the one.”

Exactly one week after I lost Tiger, a coworker called to ask me a question about something he was doing at the office. While we were talking, he suddenly said, “Hey, there’s a kitten out here.”

That was not especially surprising. Several nearby homeowners allowed their cats to roam, and people had taken kittens home from the office parking lot before. This time, apparently, it was my turn.

I told my coworker that I would take the kitten if they could catch him. That night, I brought home a tiny, seven-week-old ball of black fluff. He was skinny and had worms, but with a little tender loving care, he was soon well on his way to becoming the hellion he was meant to be.

Sable is now approaching five years old and is simultaneously the smartest and strangest cat I have ever known. He has opened the pantry on numerous occasions. Among the things he has eaten are ramen noodles, an entire sleeve of saltine crackers, a box of hot chocolate mix, bread, marshmallows, and more.

He often steals food right out from under me and might take off a finger to get a french fry. He loves licking contact lens solution and regularly buries himself beneath blankets to sleep. He even crawls inside pillowcases while the pillow is still in them.

As strange as he is, Sable gave me the outlet I needed after losing Tiger. It is impossible not to love him for all his quirks.
