By Ully, this long, open duster jacket is woven by hand using the ikat technique, in which the threads are tie-dyed before placing them on the loom. The Javanese artisan names her design Kartini, for a beloved pioneer for women's rights in Indonesia. Cotton lined.
Due to the hand-dyed and handwoven nature of ikat, patterns or position of motifs may vary from garment to garment, making each a unique work of art. The overall color scheme will remain the same.
- materials: 100% cotton
- Hand-crafted item -- color, size and/or motif may vary slightly

Ully
I create apparel inspired by our Indonesian culture. This makes me feel very proud.
I was born in South Sumatra, the first of four children, to a simple family filled with love. My parents named me Yuliana Fitri, although I go by my nickname, Ully. My mother worked as a merchant and my father was a construction labor. They loved us so much. But my father was strict with us children so that we wouldn't become dependent and spoiled.
"Today, I'm a wife and mother myself. My husband is from Java. He helps me organize my workshop and also takes care of the photography and creates content for social media. We are blessed with a daughter to complete our small family. And being a mother makes me a better person. Motherhood has changed the way I view everything and my daughter is now my main concern. I am incredibly happy to have her.
"When I was away from home in college, our economy was unstable. But for an apparel maker like me, the worst crisis I faced was when I had just started to work for myself. In 2015, my small workshop collapsed and I had to sell my house to keep going. I'll never forget it. Another time, I was unable to pay a debt collector and my motorbike was impounded.
"But there is so much to love when working with apparel. I especially love to create designs and do all the design for my collections. Our culture is my inspiration and I also follow the fashion trends. We use traditional textiles such as Java's cotton lurik, a traditional hand-spun, handwoven fabric once reserved for the use of rice farmers, who were much respected. We also rely greatly in Indonesia's legendary ikat weaving, in which both warp and weft threads are tie-dyed before placing them on the loom. It takes a lot of skill to create the motifs with this technique.
"My husband and two assistants help me create the prototype. Then a total of four people assist in making the collections. I am so happy to share my work with you."

NOVICA was started with a dream to create a better world for artisans, because a better world for artisans is a better world for all.
Along the way, the founders of NOVICA discovered something very important - as artisans around the world succeeded, there was also a visible and profound impact on the communities around them.
Your purchases are that powerful. They directly and indirectly provide for education, help with health care, fund basic needs, support children, preserve disappearing arts, and of course, spread happiness around the world.
The founders of NOVICA had a vision of the future that is not one of mega factories producing cookie cutter products for all to cheaply consume. Instead, a bright future that celebrates artisans who take the time to create an item by hand. A future where time is protected, where stories are told, where unique details are honored. Love, respect, inclusiveness become driving force.

Five stars with caveats on size and care:
This "Kartini Emerald Long Handwoven Red & Green Ikat Cotton Duster Jacket" is gorgeous. Thank you, Ully!
Size: I ordered the XXL so that my husband (who wears mens size M) and I (XL) could both wear the duster.
However, the size is not generous, especially considering it's a jacket to wear over clothing.
XXL fits closer to a form fitting XL, not as roomy as expected for a XXL jacket.
My husband wouldn't be able to wear it comfortably as the chest and armpit areas are snug.
If the duster were to shrink with hand washing in cold, I fear it may no longer fit me in the hip area.
For a jacket. I expected the XXL size to be roomier, especially the chest, armpit and hip areas.
If you like a jacket with a roomy, loose look, you may want to consider sizing up a size or two.
Suggestion to Ully: Consider making larger , roomier sizes with roomier armpit area for larger women, and also for men.
Duster details: The dyeing and weaving look beautiful and duster is well made - a true luxury.
The body (not sleeves) of the duster is lined nicely in black. The inside of sleeve cuff area is finished so the ikat cuff can be turned back & looks good.
The duster has two nice, deep pockets.
The symmetrical design on this open duster (no fastener) is basically vertical with geometric accents.
The colors are not as bright as they appeared on my screen, but I like it better that it's darker.
The colors on the duster I received are teal, burgundy, red ochre, caramel, black, silvery-gray pearl.
Care instructions: On the clothing label, "100% cotton, made in Indonesia / Hand wash cold separately, mild detergent, no bleach, dry flat in shade, warm iron."
I don't know the intricacies of ikat dyeing and have not hand washed the duster yet.
But with those care instructions I do wonder if the fabric had been preshrunk, or not, and if the dyes used were colorfast, or not.
Time will tell, but for $114.95 the fabric certainly should have been preshrink, using colorfast dyes.
Shipment from Novica: The jacket arrived 10 days after ordering.
I did not receive an email that the item had shipped until the day before it arrived; that email mentioned "Average delivery time is 1–2 weeks."
The shipment included a Novica packing slip, which stated in part, "This custom item doesn't quality for a refund or exchange, but if your item arrived damaged or incorrect, please contact Greater Good..."
The shipment also included a hand written note from Ully, who created the duster, as well as a small Novica pamphlet about Ully and her jacket. For instance, this design is called Kartini, "for a beloved pioneer for women's rights in Indonesia."
Website issues: I wasn't able to do the "Buy A Coat, Give A Coat" donation as planned due to the Greater Good website seemingly getting glitchy. Also, when I got out of the website and then later started over, turns out it had retained my cart items. When I tried to remove duplicate items, the dreaded spinning wheel went round and round and round. I had to go to a different computer in order to successfully place the Greater Good order.
This is one of a kind, that you must order!! Beautiful, well made comfortable jacket, that you can wear in the fall or winter!! Tried it on and fell in love with it 😃!!! Enjoy!!!
This jacket is really beautiful and well made. I don’t have any special occasions to wear it to, so I just wear it everywhere and I get many compliments wherever I go.
