Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina destroying homes, roads, bridges, and caused massive flooding. Countless people and pets are stranded with no way to get food or supplies.

Search and rescue teams are risking their lives to help those in need, including animals. Animal rescue specialists at ASAR Training and Response are working with various animal rescue groups and other trained rescuers to help animals after Helene.

The team is heading to the hardest hit areas to help both small and large animals. They are providing water, food and supplies, and performing evacuations.

A recent mission involved taking much-needed food and supplies to 22 horses that are stranded on Black Mountain in North Carolina. While the plan is to find a safe path through shallow water to evacuate the horses, it might be safer to care for them where they are.

The teams battled washed out roads before performing difficult mud and water crossings to reach the horses.

Check out the video of the rescue below and don't forget to share.

The rescue has begun. Watch as the first two horses (Orfeo and Rubia) cross flowing creeks and rivers with the help of rescuers.

@asar_trainingandresponse Yesterday 10/2/24 our animal search and rescue teams battled creeks, rivers and washed out roads to get Orfeo (the white horse) and his buddy off the mountain. The team is working the next few days to get the remaining 20 horses evacuated. #northcarolina #asartraining #animalrescue #hurricanehelene #horses #asheville #blackmountain #technicalrescue ♬ Fight Till the End - Shangrii-La
