Update: As of Monday, August 31st, over 900 people have been killed by the devastating floods and more than 4,000 are still missing. 

Catastrophic flash floods hit northern Nepal on August 26 following a landslide along the Trishuli and Bhotekoshi rivers. Homes and entire villages were washed away in an instant. 

Scientists are still trying to figure out what caused the disaster, with some believing a massive glacial collapse and landslide are to blame. The impact was so intense that it caused the earth to shake like a 5.2-magnitude earthquake.

Rescue efforts continue but are difficult due to destroyed bridges, washed out roads, and no power to communicate. Teams are trudging through deep mud and debris looking for survivors. 

Some people were able to escape in time on their roofs while others witnessed loved ones being swept away by the floods with their own eyes. 

Air and land rescues are being conducted to save both people and animals trapped by the floods. Family members are hoping and praying to be reunited with those still missing. 

Rescuers are racing against the clock to find survivors with another threat for more flooding in the forecast.
