Firefighters respond to all types of emergencies, not just fires. Cape Coral Fire Department received a call from a "concerned couple" who saw a dog struggling in a canal. 

He had no way to get out on his own and needed help. 

Firefighters arrived and quickly got in position to help the poor dog. One rescuer was positioned at the opening and another at the exit of the canal in case he headed their way. The rest of the team worked on removing the storm drain cover and used a pole to bring him to dry land.

Aside from being tired and wet, the dog appeared to be in good health. A tag on his collar revealed his name "Rio" and a phone number to call. Firefighters reached out but the call went to voicemail. 

Rio spent some quality time with his rescuers at Station 3 while he waited for his parents. Thanks to the power of community and social media, Rio's owners were notified and he was reunited with them. 

Rio is safely at home thanks to quick actions by local firefighters and the people who called for help. Once again firefighters showing how they are heroes in all situations and all lives matter.
