Little York Fire Department in Harris County, Texas, received a call from a concerned citizen about a puppy trapped underneath a sidewalk near a local elementary school.

Firefighters and animal control officers from Harris County Pets arrived to rescue the puppy - but quickly found out there was more than one.

After digging for two hours in the oppressive heat, they managed to rescue two puppies.

How did the puppies get under there?

Firefighters said, "During the rescue, we also discovered a large washed-out void beneath the sidewalk, creating a potential collapse hazard, especially concerning since the sidewalk leads to Heritage Elementary. County crews were notified and will be out to address the hazard."

Sadly, the four-foot-deep void claimed the life of the third puppy. Local news, KHOU 11 News shared that the rescued eight-week-old puppies named Sparky and Flame are doing well and ready for adoption.
