Help Care for Rescue Horses and Live for Free in New Zealand
Andrea Powell
An animal sanctuary on New Zealand’s South Island called Kind Farm offers volunteers free on-site accommodations in exchange for 4 hours of help for 5 out of 7 days.
This sounds like a win-win, and a dream situation for animal lovers (like me).
The mornings would be spent feeding and caring for the rescued horses, donkeys, and farm animals - which is therapy on its own. You would be greeted by pigs, goats, sheep, and the dog helpers Awa, Lola, and Scout.
According to the volunteer post, "Daily tasks vary but can include paddock grooming, brushing the donkeys and horses, walking pony’s and donkeys for extra exercise, helping out with feeding the goats and pigs, and some cleaning."
Visitors have raved about the farm and how friendly the animals and people are. Other volunteers have been pictured with the flock of sheep on the sanctuary's Facebook page.
The rest of the day would be yours to explore the beautiful countryside in the Cardrona Valley or venture into nearby towns like Wānaka.
Meet some of the rescued horses as they move pastures in the video below. You would get to know each of their stories and take comfort in knowing they have found a forever home at the sanctuary.
Anyone interested in applying can find out more here. This would be a great way to escape winter weather in the U.S., since it would be summer there. You're welcome ;-).
