Virginia Animal Shelter Surprised With $10K Check And Pet Supplies, Thanks To Your Support

Yesterday, we (The Animal Rescue Site & Greater Good Charities) were able to spoil a Virginia animal shelter and homeless pets waiting for forever homes, but we couldn't have done it without your support. Read on to see how together we made the day of staff members and shelter pets at Homeward Trails Animal Rescue.

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue in Fairfax Station, Virginia, helps roughly 3,000 homeless dogs and cats find loving families every year. Just like many other shelters across the country, they are overcrowded and need adopters, fosters, and donations.

They are one of the 1,400 shelters participating in NBCUniversal Local's 9th Annual Clear The Shelters campaign. The goal for the month of August (actually every month) is to "clear the shelters".

Dozens of dogs and cats have found loving homes so far, but there are still many more waiting for their second chance. While the staff and volunteers are hard at work caring for the animals and attending adoption events, we thought we would lend a helping hand.

Homeward Trails Animal Rescue is one of three randomly selected shelters participating in the Clear The Shelters campaign who will receive a $10,000 grant and much-needed pet supplies. Greater Good Charities and The Animal Rescue Site are able to surprise shelters with these gifts thanks to your generous donations and daily clicks.

On August 17th, Caroline Golon, a team member from Greater Good Charities, arrived at the shelter and started to unload the boxes filled with blankets, toys, and bowls. The shelter was thrilled by the donation, but the biggest surprise was yet to come.

"What we thought would be a normal day today came with the most wonderful surprise as we received a $10,000 grant and much-needed pet supplies thanks to Greater Good Charities and The Animal Rescue Site by GreaterGood! We’re so grateful to be the lucky randomly selected recipient of this donation," the shelter wrote on Facebook.

They shared the good news with their supporters and said, "These funds and supplies will allow us to help so many pets and people in our community. Thank you again to GGC and ARS for this life-saving support as we work to #cleartheshelters and #AmplifyTheGood!"

The donations made the day of not only the entire shelter team but the animals as well. Several of the adoptable dogs came outside to dig into the box of toys and enjoy some extra attention.

Golon told local news station NBC Washington, "Shelters are at capacity. We need adopters. We need fosters. We need all kinds of different people stepping up. So that's what Clear The Shelters is all about."

We have two more surprise visits to make this month, so check back to see where we head next.
