Wild Foal Trapped in Canal Rescued by Community and Reunited with Distressed Mom

Corolla Wild Horse Fund (CWHF) is a nonprofit organization that helps care for the wild horses (called Bankers) that roam freely on the Currituck Outer Banks.
It is a full-time job even with the help of the community.
They are always on call to help horses in need and ask residents and visitors to call day or night if they see a horse in trouble.
A couple weeks ago, they received a call about a foal who was trapped in one of the canals and immediately afterwards received another call about a distressed mare nearby.
Countless people and local organizations stepped up to help reunite this mama with her foal. CWHF posted, "We mobilized, and our staff headed over to where the foal was while a resident kept an eye on the mare so we wouldn’t lose her if she moved. The foal was successfully guided out of the water and then reunited with her mother after a short ride in our truck. She is nursing and behaving normally (though understandably exhausted) and we will of course keep a very close eye on her over the next couple of days. Hopefully all’s well that ends well!"
One person asked in the comments how the foal ended up in the canal and CWHF responded, "she either fell in or was crossing with her family and got accidentally left behind and didn’t know to keep walking to where there’s easier access back to the shore."
Thankfully, the foal was rescued and reunited with her mom. Rescuers at CWHF went on to thank everyone involved and wrote, "These babies sure do keep us on our toes."
Their goal is to always keep the horses wild by leaving them free to fend for themselves unless there is a life-threatening condition. Mama and her rescued foal are doing well.
Check out the nonprofit's website and learn how you can help to preserve these majestic horses. As a reminder, people are to stay at least 50 feet away from the horses and not attempt to feed or touch them.
While these wild horses have the community and CWHF looking after them, there are many rescue horses in need of care. Join us in helping rescue horses get the care they need to heal by donating here.
