30-Year-Old Dog From Portugal Named World's Oldest Dog

A couple weeks after a Chihuahua named Spike earned the Guinness World Records for Oldest Living Dog, the title has been passed on to a 30-year-old dog from Portugal.

Meet Bobi.

The purebred Rafeiro do Alentejo lives on a farm in the rural village of Conqueiros with the Costa family. He has broken two records and is now the World's Oldest Living Dog and World's Oldest Dog Ever.

His age was confirmed and announced as 30 years 266 days old on February 1st.

Bobi's owner, Leonel Costa (38), was just eight years old when Bobi was born on his family's farm. The "one of a kind" dog is still going strong three decades later.

"We have regular [vet] appointments with him and the exams have always shown that he is doing well for his advanced age," the family told Guinness World Records.

He suffers from some vision and mobility issues but still loves to eat. The sweet fella has always roamed free but now sticks closer to home and takes more naps. His family is thrilled that he is being recognized for his longevity and think the "calm, peaceful environment" on the farm has contributed to his good health.

Bobi eats human food that is rinsed of all seasonings and still enjoys playing with his feline friends. The family wish they knew the exact reason so they could share it with others. "If Bobi spoke only he could explain this," stated Leonel.

Genetics play a part as well. Bobi's mother, Gira, surpassed the life expectancy of the breed, which is 12-14 years, and lived to the age of 18.

The family cherishes all the years they have had with Bobi and hope for more healthy years. "Bobi is special because looking at him is like remembering the people who were part of our family and unfortunately are no longer here, like my father, my brother, or my grandparents who have already left this world. Bobi represents those generations."

Congratulations to Bobi who will turn 31 in May.
