Young & Old Shelter Dogs in Louisiana Get Second Chance Thanks To Flight To Freedom

On February 27th, a plane loaded with 50 at-risk shelter dogs will leave New Orleans airport and head to Idaho to give all the passengers a second chance at finding a loving home.

Every month, GreaterGood funds a Flight to Freedom - thanks to your support - with our partners Greater Good Charities. Dogs and cats are taken from overcrowded shelters and flown to shelters with open kennels. Many of these dogs would be at risk of euthanasia simply because the shelters are overwhelmed with homeless animals.

Shelters do their best to find each pet a loving home but need help. That is where we come in to fly these highly adoptable pets to freedom. This month's flight will save both young and old dogs in Louisiana.

Tammy, Billy the Kid, and Clarissa are just a few of the dogs who will be aboard the flight.

Tammy

Tammy, an 8-year-old beagle, was found as a stray with a severe ulcer on one eye. St. Charles Parish Animal Shelter took her in and within 24 hours her eye ruptured and needed emergency surgery. The sweet pup lost her eye but is now getting the care she needs. The shelter shared that the dog was apparently a former hunting dog who was neglected by her owner.

"Her owner identified her as his hunting dog and her eye had been like that and left untreated for months. We offered her owner full medical care of spay, heartworm treatment, eye enucleation, microchip and vaccines, but he declined and surrendered her to the shelter."

She deserves a loving home to spend her golden years. The staff said, "Tammy is a perky, bright and loving beagle that does great with her one eye. She deserves a permanent home with someone who will always care for this senior girl."

Billy the Kid

Another 8-year-old beagle will head to Idaho for a new life. Billy the Kid was found as a stray and taken in by St. Martin Parish Animal Shelter. They do not have any history on the sweet fella but told us he longs for a soft bed and a home of his own.

"Since entering the shelter he has stayed a quiet, calm guy who just can’t figure out why the youngsters seem to have so much energy! His perfect day is enjoying the sunshine and being his best lazy self."

Clarissa

On a cold and rainy day, animal control picked up a stray 3-year-old poodle mix and brought her to Iberville Parish Animal Shelter. The shelter staff named her Clarissa and told us about the day she arrived cold, wet, and starving. "You could rub what looked like a fluffy healthy dog but under all that fur she had nothing but skin and bones. She was brought to the shelter, where she received a bath, a warm bed, and a belly full of food."

Clarissa has transformed into a loving and playful dog who just wants to find her person.

All of these dogs and many more will get the second chance they deserve. These life-saving flights wouldn't be possible without your support.
