The post was from the Yonkers Animal Shelter in Yonkers, NY and the volunteers were looking for money to rescue the dog and place him into boarding. That one post tugged at her heartstrings and she had to help that dog and she did. Jen reached out to the volunteers; they went to get the dog and she paid for boarding for several months until an adopter came along. Wanting to make sure she was not being "scammed" , she asked to visit the shelter and meet the staff and volunteers. Never had she seen so many pit bulls and quite frankly she was scared to death. She drove home in silence with her husband and both of them said that it was the saddest place they had ever seen. The next day she asked to Volunteer. She knew in her heart donating was never going to be enough. She was committed to being there all day every weekend, and boy was it a rude awakening to a world of abuse, dog fighting, bait dogs, and prior owners with stones in their hearts. Jen's guess is that the staff and other volunteers did not think she would last a day. What they did not understand is that she does nothing at less than 100 %. The Yonkers Animal Shelter moved to their new facility in October 2013. A brand new building built on a service road in Yonkers, NY. There were not enough runs, so large dogs were being crated 23.5 hours a day. Young dogs were leash biting and acting out. Trainers and Staff told Jen those dogs would be "in the freezer" soon enough. In the freezer? These are babies. She spoke to several volunteers and found out that she could actually pay for a dog to go to a board and train facility. She did that for many dogs and they are now living in loving homes, happy and secure. The very same dogs who faced euthanasia for acting out in a stressful environment. She was learning fast. In September 2014 the shelter manager suggested that Jen become a 501(c) (3) non-profit. She did not hesitate and said yes and got to work with her lawyers. Town & Country was officially formed in November 2014. We have pulled over 400 dogs since starting Town & Country. They are all in loving homes with rules, structure and boundaries. We primarily pull dogs from the high kill NYC Animal Care and Control, Yonkers Animal Shelter, and AHS- Newark also a high kill shelter. We also take in owner surrenders primarily from Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess County. We focus a lot of our efforts on the underdogs, the overlooked dogs, the seniors, dogs with medical issues, and long stay dogs at the shelters. We back our dogs for life and for ANY reason an adopter is unable to keep the dog – the dog comes back to Town & Country no matter how much time in the home passes. We also run a medical for life program for the dogs we save that have terminal illnesses or long term permanent medical issues. We currently have 13 dogs in this program whose costs are covered by the rescue until the dog passes. In 2015 Town & Country K9 ResQ formed an alliance and partnership with Diane Bonsignore owner of Allied Dog Training. After sending a few dogs to them for rehabilitation and rehoming it became clear we had the same mission in life to save the unwanted dogs. Over the Summer of 2016, Diane and Jen had a talk about joining forces and looking for a bigger facility. Diane's space only allowed for 5-6 dogs and there are so many in need. We started our search and purchased a horse farm in Southern Dutchess County in January 2017. The purpose being that we would be able to rescue more dogs and have a safe place for those dogs to stay until a new home is found. We would have the opportunity to work with those dogs, rehabilitate the ones who need it, provide training to them, and get them ready to find their new happy ever after. The property has a large workshop/garage which is climate controlled and allows us to house up to 11 dogs. On average we have about 7-10 dogs at a time. It also gives us a secure place to house any dogs that may get returned to the rescue. While other rescues are faced with paying money to boarding facilities or making hard decisions to euthanize dogs for lack of a place to put them or for being returned we do not have that worry as we have a safe space for our dogs on the farm. We are a small but dedicated rescue who takes the time to ensure we do rescue right. We raise funds to help cover the costs of basic medical, advanced medical, food, and operational costs. We also do ask for a donation when dogs get adopted out to help offset the money that was put in to the dog while they stayed with us. Our fee's range from $200-$500 which doesn't even come close to the amount we have spent on each dog. We have many plans in the works some of which include partnering up with rescues that save beagles from testing labs, and also being a rescue partner with Pets For Patriots a non for profit dedicated to matching shelter animals with veterans. We also are looking into running programs for the community on educating our youth on proper care of dogs, training of dogs and how they too can help dogs in need.We are also actively looking to purchase a property to have a proper facility to save more animals.
